CALL FOR PAPERS DISTRIBUTED AND PARALLEL DATABASES SPECIAL ISSUE ON DATABASES AND MOBILE COMPUTING BACKGROUND: There has been a tremendous surge of interest recently in mobile computing and communications. The emergence of relatively sophisticated, low-power, low-cost and portable computing platforms, coupled with the availability and exploitation of wireless spectrum, has opened exciting opportunities for making a wide variety of applications available to people on the move. Distributed and parallel databases play two central roles in this new arena, one as essential components of the infrastructure required to support mobile users, and another as the repositories of the key applications of interest to a wide variety of users. In the first role, databases support the functions required for locating, authenticating, billing and providing administrative services to mobile users. In the second role, mobile access to databases, where the databases are fully or partially distributed across fixed and/or mobile sites, is an important emerging area, e.g. for applications such as mobile sales, personalized information services, and factory operations. There remain interesting database challenges, however, before the requirements and constraints imposed by mobile computing can be fully met. The research community has begun addressing these issues recently at several workshops and conferences. The aim of this Special Issue is to invite research contributions which address and provide solutions to important issues relating to the role of distributed and parallel databases in mobile computing. TOPICS OF INTEREST: These include (but are not limited to) the following. - Databases for efficiently locating, billing & maintaining service profiles for mobile users - Novel applications & methods for mobile users - Transaction models and correctness issues - Impacts of restricted energy & wireless bandwidth upon transaction and query processing - Data caching & allocation for mobile databases - Interfaces & query languages for mobile databases - Efficient exploitation of the wireless broadcast medium for data access and delivery - Performance and reliability evaluation - Practice and implementation experience All papers will be refereed, and papers which clearly define problems, provide specific solutions, and evaluate the results, are preferred. Papers investigating both theoretical and experimental issues are welcome. SUBMITTING PAPERS: Send six copies of the complete paper by MAY 1, 1995 to: Ms. Judith Kemp, Kluwer Academic Publishers, 101 Philip Drive, Assinippi Park, Norwell, MA 02061 Tel: (617) 871-6300, Fax: (617) 878-0449 E-mail:jkkluwer@world.std.com. Authors will be notified in Aug., 1995, and the Special Issue is planned for 1Q 1996. Instructions for Authors are regularly published in the Journal and may also be obtained from Ms. J. Kemp. Distributed and Parallel Databases is an archival, peer-reviewed journal. GUEST EDITORS: Daniel Barbara Ravi Jain N. Krishnakumar Matsushita Info. Tech. Lab.
