インディアナに住んでいるネット友達に、Mellencamp について書け、と
言われたので、書いてみます。
John Mellencamp, a.k.a. John Cougar Mellencamp は、80 年代中盤から活動
を開始したインディアナ出身の社会派ロックンローラーです。そのころのミュー
ジック・シーンと言えば、MTV が大ブームで、それに乗って、 visual を重視
したアーティストが猛威を奮っていました。例えば Michael Jackson, Prince
（当時は Prince という名前だった）, Culture Club, Dyran Dyran, Wham!,
Madonna, Cyndy Lauper, Eurithmics, とかまあそのへんの人達。私はこうい
う人達好きですけど、音楽の裏にある思想という点では、非常に薄い時代だっ
た。アメリカが失業率 10% に苦しむ中（日本はウハウハでしたが、それはさ
ておき）で、メディアと現実の差が大きかった。
で、そこに登場したのが John Mellencamp なのです。農業地帯インディアナ
の出身で、そこの農民の怒りと悲しみを歌った人です。同じ頃にメジャーになっ
た同じく社会派 Bruce Springsteen と並べ称されますが、Mellencamp が
Springsteen や他の社会派と違う所は、彼は,より down to earth で,非常に
直接的に人々の声を言葉にしている所です。音楽的には非常に渋い、非常にト
ラディショナルなロックンローラーだと思います。
じゃ、そういう訳で、代表作 "Rain on The Scarecrow" 行ってみましょう。
