Security SIG Update

There seemed to be more concern about the security of the computing environment rather than just application and network security.

CDE (Common Desktop Environment) has many security problems, worse than rhost and NFS. There was a demonstration of the Web Browser Wafer interface. DCE administration issues were discussed.

"ESnet Community Implementation of Authentication Services"

ESnet is funded by the DOE Office of Energy Research and interconnects the national laboratories and US universities funded by DOE to conduct energy research.

Authentication research is a product of an Authentication Task Force, comprising the ESCC (ESnet Site Coordinating Committee) and DCCC (Distributed Computing Coordination Committee).

Previous Recommendations

Why OSF/DCE?

Why Combine DCE and K5?

DCE and Kerberos Compatibility

DCE and Kerberos Incompatibilities

Issues to be resolved include missing DCE functionality, local UNIX and cross-cell interoperability, and problems linking Kerberos and DCE routines in the same program.

"Integrating Distributed Objects Into the Enterprise" - Peter Houston, Transarc Corporation

This is the presentation Peter will give at Decorum in February. The presentation will be available at Transarc's home page, http://www.transarc.com, after the conference. Also reference "Transarc Corporation's Distributed Object Strategy Overview" whitepaper at http://www.transarc.com:80/afs/transarc.com/public/ www/Public/ProdServ/Product/Whitepapers/object/object.html .

Object technology is progressing from presentation logic (GUI's) to data resources. Object-based business logic is beginning to emerge, data resource objects are lagging.

Transarc's focus is on business-critical distributed object technology with transactions, security, and systems administration.

Existing ORB technology has a problem with combing object invocation with security, transactional integrity, and redundant servers.

Encina++ (released with Encina 2.0)

Enables C++ developers to develop applications using a distributed object model with security, and transactions.

TIDL++ compiler generates client and server proxy/support classes and creates skeletons for objects.

Supports allows object factories that enable clients to create, use, then destroy server-based objects.

Unifies exception handling mechanisms of DCE and C++. Encina++ can be integrated with CORBA compliant ORBs to provide security and transactions.
